Boy George and Culture Club turned Hard Rock Live into a full-on '80s party Feb. 19, and nobody in the packed house seemed to mind one bit.
George took the stage just after 8 p.m. and wasted no time getting the crowd moving. The setlist leaned heavily on the classics, and the audience responded with the kind of enthusiasm that only comes from decades of genuine affection for the music. These were songs people grew up with, and hearing them live clearly meant something.
Vocally, George delivered. His voice held up beautifully throughout the night, and the band behind him was locked in from the first note. Original members Mikey Craig and Roy Hay made their presence felt, and watching them share the stage with George carried the unmistakable warmth of a group that actually enjoys playing together.
George himself was a visual spectacle, arriving in a look that mixed theatrical boldness with genuine personality. Bold eye makeup, a decorated hat, a checkered jacket and sparkly sneakers made him completely unmistakable. Several fans arrived dressed in his honor, turning the floor into something of a tribute fashion show.
Between songs, George was funny and disarmingly human. He talked about his British upbringing and peppered the night with humor and warmth.
What made the evening work was that it never felt like a nostalgia act chasing former glory. It felt like an artist fully at home in his legacy and genuinely glad to share it. A fantastic night.
