Slow Burn Theatre Company has delivered another exceptional production with The Bodyguard The Musical, currently captivating audiences at Amaturo Theater with a tantalizing blend of romance and suspense. This adaptation of the beloved 1992 film transforms the silver screen classic into a pulse-pounding theatrical experience that expertly balances romantic tension with genuine thrills. Director Patrick Fitzwater has once again demonstrated his mastery of musical theater, crafting a production that honors the source material while creating something brilliantly theatrical. The show opened at Amaturo Theater in Fort Lauderdale on June 7 and runs through June 22, 2025.

Ta-Tynisa Wilson Shines as Rachel Marron

The casting of American Idol finalist Ta-Tynisa Wilson as pop superstar Rachel Marron proves to be inspired. Wilson brings both vulnerability and fierce determination to the role, creating a character who feels authentically human despite her celebrity status. Her vocal prowess is undeniable, particularly in the show's emotional centerpiece moments. Wilson wisely avoids attempting to imitate Whitney Houston, instead bringing her own interpretation to these iconic songs while maintaining the power and emotion that made them legendary.

The chemistry between Wilson and Gabriell Salgado's Frank Farmer crackles with tension from their first contentious meeting. Salgado embodies the stoic bodyguard with just the right amount of charm beneath his professional exterior, making their eventual romance feel both inevitable and earned.

A Supporting Cast That Delivers

Lillie Eliza Thomas brings depth and complexity to Nicki Marron, Rachel's sister, avoiding the trap of playing simple jealousy. Her vocal moments, particularly during

"Saving All My Love," showcases a rich, nuanced voice that could easily carry a show of its own. The sibling dynamic between Thomas and Wilson feels authentic, grounded in real affection that makes their conflict all the more poignant.

Timothy Mark Davis deserves special recognition for his chilling portrayal of The Stalker. Davis creates a genuinely unsettling presence that maintains the production's thriller elements without crossing into camp. His ability to generate genuine unease in the audience speaks to both his commitment to the role and the production's success in balancing genres.

Young Jaxon Compas as Fletcher brings natural charm and believability to the role of Rachel's son, creating touching moments with both Wilson and Salgado that anchor the family dynamics at the story's heart.

Technical Excellence Elevates the Experience

The production's technical elements work in seamless harmony to create an immersive experience. Nikolas Serrano's scenic design transforms the Amaturo Theater into multiple worlds, from intimate domestic spaces to glittering concert venues. The transitions feel effortless, maintaining the show's momentum while allowing for spectacular musical numbers.

Clifford Spulock's lighting design deserves particular praise for its ability to shift between the warm intimacy of romantic scenes and the stark tension of thriller moments. The choreography by Reynel Reynaldo gives the ensemble moments to truly shine, with dance numbers that feel both contemporary and timeless.

Whitney's Songs Find New Life

Perhaps most remarkably, The Bodyguard The Musical succeeds in giving Whitney Houston's iconic catalog new theatrical life. Rather than simply presenting concert versions of beloved songs, the production integrates them organically into the narrative. When Wilson finally delivers "I Will Always Love You," it feels like a natural emotional crescendo rather than an obligatory showstopper.

Slow Burn Theatre Company has created something special with The Bodyguard The Musical. It's a production that respects its source material while carving out its own theatrical identity. The combination of strong performances, exceptional technical work, and beloved music creates an evening that satisfies both longtime fans and newcomers to the story.
