Boca Raton had a very good excuse to revisit the ’90s on September 18. I Want My ’90s Back marked its second anniversary at The Blue Dog Cookhouse & Bar with actor Brian Austin Green as host and DJ Johnny Quest in charge of the throwback soundtrack.

Green was a particularly fitting guest. For millions of viewers, he will always be David Silver, the aspiring musician who grew up on Beverly Hills, 90210 while the audience grew up alongside him. Inviting him to host a night devoted to the decade gave the party a connection to the pop culture it celebrated.

Johnny Quest’s role was just as essential. A ’90s night lives or dies by its music: the songs that can transport a room in the space of an opening beat, whether they once played through a car stereo, a Walkman or a bedroom radio. With Quest spinning throwbacks throughout the evening, the soundtrack was the main attraction as much as the celebrity guest.

The free anniversary event was designed as a thank-you to the community that has supported I Want My ’90s Back for two years. The announced festivities included an open bar and light bites during the first hour, giveaways and a chance for fans to meet Green. Attendance was capped at 300 guests, giving the celebration a more personal scale than a sprawling convention or concert.

That is the appeal of a night like this. Nostalgia works best when it brings people together in the present, trading favorite songs and old stories while making a few new memories. At The Blue Dog, the anniversary offered Boca Raton a playful reminder that the ’90s still have plenty of life left in them and that a great DJ can make the trip back feel effortless.
