The thread that ran through last night’s Anthony Green set at Culture Room was gratitude. Again and again he expressed between songs how thankful he is that people keep showing up, and how happy he is to be able to play music for all of us.
Opening with “So It Goes” from 2022’s Boom.Done. it was immediately clear this night would be electric.
The way Green’s songs have a signature slow build before bursting into full instrumental expression builds explosive anticipation.
In an era when people are programming machines to create songs or editing all of character out of their music, Green has a raw and vulnerable, unmistakable live sound.
Touring with a trumpet player and keys really fleshes out the performance. Standing near the front of the stage, the music envelopes you and you are fully immersed.
My favorite thing about Culture Room is there’s not a bad place to watch the show. Whether you’re on the floor front and center, off to the side, or upstairs looking below: every inch of the space feels intimate. I’ve been going to shows there since I was 18, and I have a lot of excellent memories as a result.
Last month Anthony Green released a cover of Porno for Pyro’s “Pets,” breathing new life into this classic 90s track and making it entirely his own.
Performing this song launched us into a four song run of Saosin and Circa Survive songs, including “Seven Years” and “Act Appalled.”
Green is an incredibly talented singer, stretching his vocals from soft and melodic to an explosive scream that reaches your core as a listener.
Taking in his passionate performance is a gift.
Rounding the 16 song set with “Get Out” and “This Song Won’t Save You,”
Green stepped to the front of the stage and encouraged us to sing along.
Toward the end of the evening, he said:
“Music is a communal mechanism that shows us the best in each other.”
I noticed I had subconsciously placed my hand to my heart. I felt his words, and felt connected to everyone in the room sharing this experience.
What a way to spend a Wednesday night: Surrounded by great music and like-minded people!
